Another Prediction of Dire Climate Change

Recently I read an article in Newsweek's Science section concerning predictions of severe climate change about to beset the earth. In the article climatologist say "there are ominous signs that the earth's weather patterns have begun to change dramatically the changes may protend a drastic decline in food production with serious political implications for every nation on earth." According to climate experts the drop in food production could occur as soon as ten years.

Climatologist say the "evidence to support these predictions has now begun to accummulate so massively that meteorologist are hardpressed to keep up with it." Just last spring "there was the most devastating outbreak of tornadoes ever recorded, 148 twisters killed more than 300 hundred people and caused a half of billion dollars' worth of damamge in thirteen U.S. states." According to records farmers in "Great Britian have seen their growing season decline by about two weeks since 1950".

"To scientists, these seemingly disparate incidents represent the advance signs of fundemental changes in the world's weather."

I know many of you are thinking ok what is new in this article that merits a post. Actually the article was written for the April 28 th, 1975 Newsweek by Peter Gwynne regarding the immediate onset of the coming mini ice age. The article said that scientist are unanimous in the view that the current weather tend will have dire political and agricultural impacts for the rest of the century.

Now we fast forward to the year 2006 and so far we haven't seen the good old US turned into a play land for polar bears. Todays current state of fear is concern over global warming. Nasa says the world's glacier are in retreat. Al Gore (now that is a source of authority) say the automobile is the most dangerous thing man has invented. Other climatologist say the oceans' levels are rising and are about to turn coastal cities like Houston into modern day Atlantis.

Global warming is accepted as fact by the mass media and many American citizens. A good portion of our national GDP is spent to prevent it and yet we really don't know if it is really going to happen. Remember scientist in 1975 were predicting a coming ice age. I am sure they were certain that it was an event that could not be avoided unless drastic action was taken by the worlds governments. However they were wrong. Why do we think that the scientist predicting the immediate onset of global warming are correct. They are basing their predictions on weather models that to date have not proven to be totally accurate.

The worlds climate is a complicated system that is constantly changing to achieve balance. There are so many factors that impact climate change that it makes it impossible to predict with certainty what the future may hold. Just as the scientist in the 70's were wrong there is a strong proability that they could be wrong now.
